In October 2023 and part of WA Bike Month the City held a Come and Ride Dome Cafe on the CBD Foreshore to Drummond Cove bike riding event.

More than 80 community members joined City staff on the 26km round trip on shared paths.

What is the Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion Project?

The Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion Project is a 100 per cent State Government funded initiative that will see an additional 8.3 kilometres of high-quality shared path added to the City of Geraldton’s walking and riding network.

As part of the project, the City of Geraldton will receive  $4.9 million from the State Government to design and construct three shared paths that will connect the most northern and southern suburbs to the existing shared path network. These paths include:

  • the Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path: a 2.5m wide, 380m long paved path between the Chapman Road and Hillview Drive roundabout (completed in 2022);
  • the Chapman Road Shared Path: a 3 m wide and 3.5 km long paved path between Corallina Quays and Glenfield Beach Drive (construction underway); and
  • the Cycle Path Brand Highway shared path: a 3 m wide, 4.5 km shared path between Cape Burney and Tarcoola Beach.

Why are shared paths being built?

For over a decade the community has been requesting off-road shared paths that will enable people to safely ride or walk from Cape Burney in the south, to Drummond Cove in the north.  These paths are also identified as priorities in the Geraldton 2050 Cycling Strategy.

Who is funding these projects?

The $4.9 million Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion Project is 100 per cent State Government funded and a key McGowan Government election commitment.

  • $190,000 has been provided for the Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path
  • $1.8 million has been committed to the Chapman Road Shared Path
  • $2.9 million has been committed to the Cycle Path Brand Highway shared path

When will the paths be built?

Construction on the Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path was completed in December 2022.

Construction of the Chapman Road Shared Path is underway, .

A feasibility study for the Cycle Path Brand Highway shared path was completed in 2021-22 and design of the path is now underway. A timeline for the construction of the path will be determined after the design is complete.

Will the shared paths be constructed along the beaches?

No, the Geraldton Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan does not recommend building any infrastructure near the coast that would be impacted by coastal erosion. Building a path further inland from the beach is also not possible as the City does not own, or manage, some of the bushland blocks located between Sunset Beach and Drummond Cove and between Tarcoola Beach and Cape Burney.

Where exactly will the shared paths be constructed?

The 2.5m wide, 380m long Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path has been constructed on the southern side of Glenfield Beach Drive.

The 3m wide,  3.5km long Chapman Road Shared Path is being constructed along the western side of Chapman Road.

The Cycle Path Brand Highway shared path is expected to be constructed along the western side of Brand Highway.

All paths are expected to be constructed as off-road bi-directional shared paths.

Why were these locations chosen?

Connectivity and continuity are key factors in determining the location of shared paths.

The Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path connects the existing shared path located on the west side of the Chapman Road roundabout to the existing footpath located at the Hillview Drive roundabout.

The Chapman Road Shared Path will directly connect the path at the Glenfield Beach Drive roundabout to the recently completed shared path at Corallina Quays in Sunset Beach. It will also directly connect into the future Glenfield Activity Centre.

The shared paths will provide access to the area’s natural landscapes while also forming an important recreational asset for the community. They will enable residents the opportunity to ride, walk or scoot to school, work or the local shops, and provide visitors to the region with a new option to explore the City safely.

Will construction of the shared paths impact traffic?

There may be some short term disruptions to traffic during the construction period. The City will endeavour to keep disruptions to a minimum when and where possible.

Will trees and vegetation along the road be impacted by the construction of the shared paths?

Yes, some trees and vegetation may need to be removed to ensure an adequate buffer strip between the shared path and Chapman Road is maintained.
