What it means to be a ratepayer
Being a property owner in the City of Greater Geraldton requires the payment of rates each year. Your rates provide Council with the revenue needed to manage all the services and facilities which make the City a vibrant and attractive city to live in.
Each financial year – as our City needs change – a new budget is prepared to support the needs of the entire community.
Rates are issued by the City each financial year. Your rate notice will be mailed to you in July following the budget adoption process.
Have your say on proposed rates
Each year, the City advertises and encourages feedback on its plans for the future. The City also advertises for comment on or about its proposed differential rates from the annual budgeting process. Ratepayers are encouraged to take the opportunity to study and comment on these important documents as both have implications on the rates imposed and services provided.
The 2016/2017 budget reflects a number of initiatives which the City will undertake over the next 12 months as we continue to provide capital works and service delivery for a growing community. The rate increase provides a balance between the high demand for service delivery and the development of the City and is in accordance with Council’s plan for the next five years.
All rate accounts are calculated by multiplying the property’s Gross Rental Value (GRV), which is supplied by Landgate, by the rate in the dollar which is set by the City at the annual budget meeting. Non-residential properties in the City Centre, Marina Mixed Use and Additional Use City zones have been additionally charged a specified area rate. The specified area rate was introduced to fund car parking operations which includes land acquisition, parking development, operations, maintenance and any associated financing costs.
