Construction of the long-awaited Chapman Road Shared Path connecting Drummond Cove to the City of Greater Geraldton’s cycling network is now complete.

Fully funded as part of the State Government’s cycling election commitment package, the 3.5km long, 3m wide red asphalt path built on the west side of Chapman Road, connects to the existing path at Corallina Quays in Sunset Beach and the new shared path on Glenfield Beach Drive.

Locals and visitors now have a safe walking and riding route to school, work, local shops, beaches and the rest of Geraldton.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is pleased the long-awaited project is finished.

“Community requests for an off-road cycle path at this location started more than 13 years ago and never wavered during that time,” he said.

“In 2018 it even became one of the top priorities in the Geraldton 2050 Cycling Strategy.

“Thanks to generous funding from the State Government this community aspiration has finally become reality and it is very rewarding to see people using it every day.”

Drummond Cove Progress Association President Brent Allen congratulated everyone involved in the project.

“I’d like to congratulate residents and the community groups who have pushed for a decade to get these two new shared paths built,” he said.

“It is fantastic to see this significant long-term project completed and it is great to see people running, walking, cycling and pushing prams along these shared paths every day.”

The Chapman Road Shared Path was the second stage of the Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion Project which will expand the local network by 8.3km when completed.

The $1.8million project is part of the State Government’s $4.9 million commitment to expand the City’s cycling network.

Stage one, the Glenfield Beach Drive Shared Path was completed in 2022 and stage three is currently in the design phase and aspires to see a shared path constructed along Brand Highway from Tarcoola Beach to Cape Burney.
