Prospective Council candidates invited to learn more

With a local government election just around the corner, those who may be thinking of running for Council are invited to attend a Candidate Information Session.

If you’re passionate about making a difference and driving change in the community, this is a great way to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of Councillors.

The terms of office of six Councillors and the Mayor are ending later this year, and there will be four available positions on Council, as well as the position of Mayor.

City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim said the session was a great way to gain some insight into what it’s like being on Council.

“Anyone who may be interested in becoming a Councillor would benefit greatly from this session,” he said.

“Councillors make a huge impact on our city and are responsible for representing the long-term interests of the community on a range of important matters.

“We encourage all those who may be thinking of putting their hand up in this year’s election to attend the event.”

Presentations will be made by City CEO Ross McKim, a current councillor and a representative from the WA Electoral Commission.

Nominations for those wanting to run for Council open on Thursday 31 August 2023 and close at 4pm on Thursday 7 September 2023.

Anyone intending to nominate for the election must complete a free online induction course, provided on the DLGSC website.

The course gives community members a basic understanding of what is required from a council member before nominations open.

The City’s Candidate Information Session will take place at 5.30pm on Wednesday 23 August at the Civic Centre Function Room on Cathedral Avenue.

WALGA also recently hosted a free webinar for those interested in running for Council and the recording will be available on the City’s website in the coming week.

You can find more information on the election, and links to relevant webinar recordings on the City’s website.

If once decided and that the Federal Voice Referendum does not clash with the proposed local government election date, this year’s election has been designated to take place on Saturday 21 October with election packs proposed to be sent to voters in September.
