Geraldton’s #1 tourist attraction the HMAS Sydney II Memorial will farewell its inaugural Warden Don Rolston this month after serving the site for the past 13 years.

Mr Rolston officially hands over the mantle to Peter “Spike” Jones who was elected by the City of Greater Geraldton Council at October’s Ordinary Meeting.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said congratulations and praise are due.

“I would like to personally thank Don for his contributions to the HMAS Sydney II Memorial and community over the years. He has been a dedicated Warden who has done much for the site,” he said.

“Don was our first Warden and leaves the role in very capable hands.

“Spike has served as Deputy Warden for a number of years now and it’s fantastic to see him take on the role. Spike has deep ties in the community and I know everyone will congratulate him in this appointment.”

HMAS Sydney II Memorial departing Warden Don Rolston said he vacates the position with fond memories.

“The role of the Warden includes being an ambassador and a source of contact from across Australia and overseas - a responsibility I was proud to accept and farewell with a heavy heart,” he said.

“I am confident the site will continue to make our community and nation proud, as it is regarded as unique by all standards by which memorials are recognised.”

HMAS Sydney II Memorial incoming Warden Peter “Spike” Jones said he is looking forward to the opportunity.

“I am proud to have served my country and my city. This is my opportunity to give my support and my thanks back to Greater Geraldton,” he said.

“I have been involved with the cadets from the very first service for HMAS Sydney II back when the site was just a sand dune.

“I am very proud to have served alongside Don.”

Mr Jones will be supported by incoming Deputy Warden Warren Nathan.

The Warden is responsible for assisting the City of Greater Geraldton with the daily care and administration of the Memorial as well as attending to all matters of customs, traditions and protocols for commemorative ceremonies.

Mr Jones will be officially appointed as Warden at the 81st HMAS Sydney Commemorative Sunset Service, which will take place on Saturday 19 November.

More information about the event will be available in the coming weeks.
