Blue recycling bins on the move

Following community requests, the blue recycling bins in Drummond Cove have been returned to the John Batten Community Hall carpark on Whitehill Road.

Three years ago, high bin contamination rates which included fish frames, guts and general rubbish resulted in the bins being moved from the carpark to Bayside Park.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he is confident the community will do the right thing, no matter where the bins are located.

“We’ve had the blue bins in this location before and unfortunately some people thought they could throw whatever they wanted into them,” he said.

“Unfortunately when contamination occurs, the entire contents of these bins goes straight to landfill which ruins it for everyone making the effort to recycle their type 1 and 2 plastics.

“The community says it wants this service so we are counting on them to do the right thing this time otherwise the bins will be moved again.”

For more than three years the City has been collecting type 1 and 2 plastics in blue bins in Drummond Cove and 14 other locations across the City.

To identify what plastics are type 1 and 2, look for the symbol on the item. Plastics include soft drink, juice and water bottles as well as common white and coloured plastic such as milk containers and shampoo bottles.

All bottle lids should be removed and items rinsed out before being recycled.
