In response to antisocial behaviour in Rocks Laneway, the City of Greater Geraldton will close the space for two weeks whilst solutions are sought to counter ongoing negative issues.

In cooperation with local Police, the City made the decision to trial a two-week closure as a result of the actions of a small portion of the community.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said whilst he was extremely disappointed to see the community space close temporarily, he is hopeful the situation can be improved.

“The decision to trial a two-week closure of Rocks Laneway was not made lightly,” he said.

“We’ve been in discussions with local Police for some time now and we hope trialling a short-term closure will help to diminish the disruptive behaviour in the Laneway as we explore longer term solutions.

“Key drivers in transforming Rocks Laneway were to provide a space for our community to enjoy a range of new programs and activities and make a vital connection from our popular Foreshore, through to Marine Terrace and CBD.

“When events are held in the space they are extremely well attended and received by the community – so although it is disappointing to see the anti-social behaviour occur we are taking steps explore how to best alleviate the problem alongside Geraldton Police.

“We look forward to the space continuing to be used for its original purpose, activating our wonderful city centre,” added Mayor Clune.

Geraldton Police OIC Senior Sargent Chris Martin said he was confident the measures would result in a positive outcome.

"In recent weeks Geraldton Police have responded to number of reports of antisocial behaviour and other community concerns within the Rocks Laneway on Marine Terrace,” he said.

“Local Police are working in collaboration with the City to address these issues and are confident these temporary measures will reduce this behaviour and ensure the space can be used in a safe and secure manner for all members of the community."

Since opening in September 2019, Rocks Laneway has hosted hundreds of events and activities, bringing thousands to the CBD.

Rocks Laneway will temporarily close from Wednesday 13 March and will re-open on Thursday 28 March.

The City will continue to work with local Police to monitor behaviour in the area.
