Those passionate about making a difference and driving change in the community are encouraged to consider running for Council in this year’s Local Government Election.

An upcoming Candidate Information Session will provide insight and information into the roles and responsibilities of Council and Councillors, as well as the skills required for the position.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was a great opportunity for those who may be unsure to come and learn more.

“If you’ve ever considered becoming a Councillor and have some questions, or just want to know what it’s all about, I highly recommend this session,” he said.

“As a Councillor you are responsible for representing the long-term interests of the community on a range of matters including community wellbeing and development, sport and recreation, public health and safety, community infrastructure, future planning and everything in between.

“I can personally say being a Councillor is a very rewarding role and it’s a way to consider and hear your community’s perspectives.”

Held every two years, this year’s election will take place on Saturday 16 October 2021 with seven of the City’s 13 Councillors up for re-election.

Anyone intending to nominate for election must first complete a free online induction course, provided by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) at www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/local-government

Nominations for those wanting to run for Council open on Thursday 2 September 2021 and close at 4pm on Thursday 9 September 2021.

The Candidate Information Session will take place at 5.30pm on Thursday 26 August 2021 at the Civic Centre Function Room on Cathedral Avenue.

Presentations will be made by City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim and a representative from the WA Electoral Commission.
