With the arrival of cooler weather, the City of Greater Geraldton is kick starting this year’s planting season by giving away 500 seedlings in support of the Million Trees Project.

Residents who live in the City region are eligible to apply for two local providence seedlings which will be available for pickup at the beginning of the planting season.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged residents to apply early.

“This is the first time the City is giving away seedlings and they will, without a doubt, get snapped up quickly,” he said.

“Planting native species in our gardens is more sustainable as they are fully adapted to our climate and soil conditions, and provide habitat and food for our local wildlife.

“These seedlings will also be counted towards the Million Trees Project which is about greening our City region by increasing our urban forest.”

The five species of plants being provided by the Community Nursery include Noddy Bush, Salt Bush, Cockies’ Tongues, One Sided Bottlebrush and Tall Labichea.

Interested residents must apply to receive two free seedlings either online here or in person at the Civic Centre on 63 Cathedral Avenue before the application period closes on Wednesday 24 May 2023.

Applicants will be notified when and where they can collect their seedlings.

Greening the City and planting trees was identified as a top community priority in 2011. Since then, more than 521,000 plantings have been registered with the Million Trees Project.
