Construction of an off road one-way cycle path on the western side of Chapman Road at the Phelps Street Roundabout will begin on Monday 18 March 2024.

The 280m long and 2.2m wide red asphalt path will enable northbound bike riders on Chapman Road to safely bypass the busy roundabout.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the bypass will improve the safety of on road cyclists at the intersection.

“Currently, the on road bike lane heading north out of the City Centre ends at the Phelps Street roundabout and starts again on the other side at the Beresford Foreshore,” he said.

“With the rise in popularity of bike riding over the last couple of years, providing this missing link in the network will enable cyclists using active transport to commute to and from the City Centre to completely bypass the busy intersection instead.”

Safely connecting these two sections of the on road cycle lane is a top priority in the City’s Cycling Strategy.

Local contractor Redcat Holdings will be constructing the path which will take approximately five weeks to complete.

The $292,000 project has been jointly funded by the City and the Department of Transport through the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program
