Do you know someone who is doing great things for the community? Nominations for the Auspire Community Citizen of the Year awards are now open!

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged everyone to take a moment to nominate a person, group or event that makes a positive impact in the local community.

“Greater Geraldton is chock full of local legends who work tirelessly to make our community a great place to live,” he said.

“The Auspire Community Citizen of the Year Awards is an excellent way to give those unsung heroes the applause they deserve.

“I highly encourage everyone to head to the Auspire website and complete a nomination before they close on 31 October.”

Recognising local heroes for more than 20 years, the Awards are made up of four categories:

  • Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals over 16 years)
  • Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years)
  • Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years and over)
  • Active Citizenship (for community groups or events)

Previous winners of the award include Nick Austin, Hannah Miles, Karen Giles and Marina Parkrun, as well as Anthony Critch and John Peet.

In a survey of 2023 recipients, 86% of respondents said the Awards assisted in generating better community connections, and 75% said it helped increase public awareness of their cause or organisation and built social cohesion.

The winners for 2024 will be announced at Australia Day events in Geraldton and Mullewa on Friday 26 January.
