Water efficiency practices at the Geraldton Aquarena has seen the facility named a Waterwise Aquatic Centre as part of a Water Corporation program.
Announced earlier this year, the City of Greater Geraldton’s Aquarena were among four regional centres endorsed for showing waterwise leadership and contributing to the efficiency of water use.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the endorsement was welcome recognition of the City’s commitment to being waterwise.
“The Aquarena has put in place a number of water saving practices in order to be named a ‘Waterwise Aquatic Centre’,” he said.
“This is a real testament to the City’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability.
“I’d also like to commend the work of the Aquarena staff for implementing these practices and being leaders in this space.”
Each newly endorsed centre has committed to being waterwise through actions such as installing automated taps and toilets, introducing water efficient appliances, daily water use monitoring, leak detection programs and waterwise gardens.
The City implemented a number of initiatives in a water saving action plan at the Aquarena in order to meet the criteria.
This included meters being read on a daily basis, leak testing, a water efficient purchasing policy in place, educational materials displayed, flow rates in showers and basins reduced, waterwise plants and mulch used in landscaping, water efficient cleaning methods and a range of other initiatives.
The Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program is a partnership between the Water Corporation and the Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA) and has helped save around 918 million litres of water since 2008.
