Spalding revitalisation begins

Construction of the Spalding Revitalisation Project which includes upgrades to the AMC Park, improvements to the Mitchell Street Community Centre and building new road extensions is underway.

The works are part of the State Government’s $9 million Spalding Regional Renewal Project already underway that involves refurbishing older public housing properties, creating new road connections and beautifying the area.

The $5.2 million project is joint funded with the State Government providing $4.9 million in grant funding and the City contributing the remainder towards the works.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he’s looking forward to seeing the community’s ideas to revive the area come to life.

“The AMC Park Masterplan, developed and endorsed by local community members of all ages and backgrounds, will completely transform the look and feel of the park and how the Mitchell Street Community Centre can be used,” he said.

“New road connections and extensions will make it so much easier for community members living on the west side of the centre to walk, ride or drive to the facility and visit the park.

“These changes will pump new life into the heart of the suburb and hopefully be the catalyst for further developments and private investment in the area.”

Improvements to the Mitchell Street Community Centre involve formalising more car parking, adding ACROD bays, building a veranda on the east side of the building and reconfiguring the interior so the function room opens directly onto the park.

Upgrades to the AMC Park, which include an adventurous playground, basketball court, public art, yarning/education circle, covered picnic nodes, new pathways, a bush tucker garden and public toilets will be delivered in stages.

The Department of Communities has already begun the first stage of the renewal works which saw the removal of a number of aged public houses on Bogle Way and Sullivan Court and the refurbishing of other public housing on these streets.

Second stage renewal road works include the construction of a new road to connect Bogle Way to Mitchell Street, an extension of Robinson Street from Mitchell Street to Broome Street which will feature two new roads onto Bogle Way and Sullivan Court.

Construction will take approximately eight months to complete.

Local contractor Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets (GBSC) will be undertaking the AMC Park and Mitchell Street Community Centre upgrades. Road construction will be undertaken by Hawthorn Civil & Mining Services.
