Soaring conditions for Geraldton Wavesailing Nationals

Conditions for this week’s Wavesailing Nationals are looking to soar, setting the scene for the five-day event that has attracted windsurfers from all over Australia to the Midwest.

Competitors will take to the waves of Coronation Beach, one of the best places to windsurf in the state, with the hope of taking out first place.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was a massive coup to have the event in the region.

“We’re pumped to have the Wavesailing Nationals just north of Geraldton and to have the opportunity to show off our bustling regional city to travellers,” he said.

“It’s going to be a massive week in the Midwest and I couldn’t think of a better time to visit and experience what we have on offer here.

“Coronation Beach sports some of the best conditions for windsurfing and I wish everyone competing in the event the best of luck.”

In addition to sponsoring the event, the City have thrown their support behind professional windsurfer and Geraldton local Jaeger Stone.

While it’s unsure if the champion will be competing as yet due to an injury, he said the conditions would be world-class.

“Geraldton, and particularly Coronation Beach, is a great place to hold the Australian Titles this year because it has such consistent wind and waves,” he said.

“The Midwest is a really well-known and highly regarded place amongst windsurfers all over the world and hopefully this event helps us create more interest in the area locally, nationally and internationally and encourages people to come visit.”

The competition officially kicks off at Coronation Beach on Wednesday 5 December and concludes on Sunday 9 December. A winner will be announced on Saturday 8 December and they will claim a cash prize of $1,000.

The Wavesailing Nationals are brought to the region by Windsurfing WA and Australian Windsurfing Association with support from the City of Greater Geraldton and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
