Rocks Laneway is in the spotlight after architects Taylor Robinson Chaney Broderick (TRCB) claimed the John Septimus Roe Award for Urban Design at the 2020 WA Architecture Awards.

The awards celebrate diversity, sustainability and innovation in the state’s building environment and were broadcasted via a virtual presentation on YouTube last week.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn praised TRCB on the accolade.

“Our congratulations to the team at TRCB for their work on the Rocks Laneway project – they are very deserving of the prestigious urban design award,” he said.

“The space makes a vital link between the CBD and the Geraldton Foreshore, and has quickly become a community favourite because of the design, artwork and nod to history it represents.

“We wish TRCB all the very best in the National Architecture Awards later this year.”

TRCB Director Fred Chaney said the project held a special place in the hearts of the wider project team.

“We enjoyed a terrific design partnership with UDLA landscape architects and artist Trevor Richards” he said.

“The City really bought into the design concepts and provided vision and leadership in imagining what the various places created by the Rocks Laneway project could enable for the Geraldton community.

“It’s so important that projects like this are supported with creative events management and place activation. Our sense is that the City has more than delivered.”

The Awards Panel commended the project for its adaptive reuse of buildings, recycling of materials and expansive public art piece by Trevor Richards.

Since opening almost 12 months ago, Rocks Laneway has grown from strength to strength becoming a hotspot for community members to hangout and enjoy events as well as stimulate the CBD and local businesses.

Winners of the WA Architecture Awards will now progress to the National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in November this year.
