Activating vibrancy through a number of programs and events will continue in the community after Rio Tinto extended their funding agreement for the City of Greater Geraldton’s Youth Vibrancy Officer role.

Rio Tinto entered into another three year deal with the City recently which originally began in 2016.

A total of $55,000 over three years from the organisation will part fund the role with the City.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the ongoing MOU facilitated extremely positive outcomes in the community.

“The Youth Vibrancy Officer role coordinates many of our much loved community programs such as Sunset Yoga, Battle of the Bands and the popular Fools Fest event,” he said.

“This role also helps to create vibrancy and activation on our Foreshore with a number of activities as part of the School Holiday Program.

“We’re proud of this partnership with Rio Tinto and we thank them for being able to give so much to our community.”

The Youth Vibrancy Officer also facilitates programs for at risk youth such as Midnight Basketball and Friday Night Football.

Rio Tinto Superintendent Community Engagement Justin Francesconi said the decision to continue the partnership with the City was easy given the proven benefits of the role.

“We’re ecstatic that we could continue this MOU with the City because we can see the positive impact it is having on our community and local youth,” he said.

“This year marks 13 years of our FIFO operations from Geraldton and during this time we’ve been proud to support the Geraldton community through our employment opportunities.

“The partnership formalises our long-term relationship with the City and our ongoing commitment to the Geraldton community.”

The Youth Vibrancy Role is currently being advertised on the City’s website.
