Substantial winter rains across the Midwest, paired with a bumper wildflower season will see more people hitting rural roads over the coming months.

With more traffic expected, local residents and visitors to Greater Geraldton are being urged to take care and drive to the conditions on our 1369kms of unsealed roads.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said driving on unsealed roads, especially during and after rain events can be hazardous.

“The strong winter rains Greater Geraldton has been receiving this year are resulting in constantly changing road conditions and reoccurring road closures to ensure community safety,” he said.

“When it rains, our unsealed gravel roads can deteriorate quickly turning slippery and soft which could cause serious damage to both the vehicle and the road.

“Heavy rains can also wash away flood prone sections of an unsealed road which in turn become extremely hazardous to traffic.

“If you come across a ROAD CLOSED sign on your travels, please remember that closed means closed.

“No one wants their weekend wildflower adventure turning into a rescue mission,” he added.

While driving on unsealed roads remember to slow down and be aware that road conditions can change rapidly. This will help keep them in good condition longer, reduce the wear and tear on vehicles and increase the overall safety of all road users.

Before heading out into the region, check the weather forecast here and road condition report on the City’s website here.
