The transformation of the Olive Street Reserve into a landscaped public open space has entered the second stage.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said completion of stage one remediation works at the site in Mahomets Flats is a significant milestone in this legacy project.

“The most important aspect of this project was the onsite management of contaminated materials in accordance with obligations under the Contaminated Sites Act 2013,” he said.

“The works involved placing these materials in a containment area, covering them with geotextile fabric and clean fill to form a permanent containment cell.

“Now that these earthworks are done other works including the construction of an ephemeral wetland and drainage system can begin on the eight hectare reserve.”

The drainage system will filter diverted rainwater from the South Pipe for pollutants, rubbish and other debris before it fills a wetland area and recharges the groundwater.

The area will also feature a large grassed recreation area surrounded by landscaped native plantings.

“Council is looking forward to the completion of yet another legacy project which will result in a fantastic open space for the entire community to enjoy.”
