Olive Street Housing Project delivers homes for key workers

Seven new homes designed to support essential workers and increase local housing supply have been completed as part of the City of Greater Geraldton's Olive Street Housing Project.

The single-storey houses will provide accommodation for State officers through a long-term lease arrangement with the Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) program.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the completion of the project demonstrated Council's commitment to taking practical action in response to housing pressures facing the City region.

"Australia is in a national housing crisis and we are feeling those effects locally,” he said.

“By increasing housing supply, these homes will help attract and retain the skilled workforce our community depends on, while creating more opportunities for local families to find a place to rent or purchase.

“I’d like to thank the State Government for its support in bringing this project to life, helping transform underutilised City-owned land into much-needed housing stock.

"We're proud to see this project completed and look forward to welcoming these workers and their families to our community,” he added.

Housing and Works Minister John Carey said the project is a great example of what State and Local Governments can achieve by working together to boost the supply of homes in regional Western Australia.

“The State Government is partnering with industry and local governments to significantly boost the supply of GROH homes across regional Western Australia”.

“In the last State Budget, our Government made a record $419 million into expanding our GROH program to ensure that the teachers, police officers and other government workers our regional towns need have access to housing”.

“This project demonstrates to other local governments the mutual benefits of partnering with the State Government to deliver GROH homes”.

Work on the construction of the seven turn-key homes began in September 2025 with completions staged over a number of months

The $4.7 million project delivered by local contractor Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets also provided economic benefits beyond housing outcomes, supporting local jobs and businesses.

This project aligns with the Leading theme of the City’s Strategic Community Plan which reflects the organisation’s commitment to engaging with the community to enhance decision making.
