New home for original music in Geraldton

Regional Sounds, a music organisation dedicated to fostering creative growth and supporting pathways for musicians in the Midwest, will give the original Railway Station building on Marine Terrace a new lease on life.

This comes after Council last year approved a three month lease with an option for a two month extension.

The historic structure which formerly housed the Geraldton Visitors Centre will be the home for original music in the Midwest. This year the space will offer a hub for artist collaboration, co-working for musicians, professional development, skills-focused programs, and community building through accessible live music events.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the arts played a key role in the community.

“We are excited to be able to provide a space for Regional Sounds to nurture the growth of music and musicians in Geraldton,” he said.

“Not only will we be elevating homegrown music right here in the Midwest we will be further enhancing the vibe of our CBD as part of our overall City Centre Revitalisation Plan.

“This project is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to the arts and helps cement Geraldton as the cultural capital of regional Western Australia.”

Regional Sounds Executive Director Alexia Parenzee is excited about the prospect of Midwest creatives having access to a dedicated original music space.

“To have found a home for original music in the region in the heart of Geraldton is just incredible,” she said.

“By having this hub whereby artists can deepen their musical knowledge, workshop ideas, create new music, and be supported to cultivate career pathways will be a crucial part in building up a sustainable future pathway for music in the regions.

“This will not only enhance the local Midwest music scene but be beneficial for the wider community as a whole.”

Regional Sounds will open its doors to the public soon.
