Upgrades to Mullewa Recreation Centre and Mullewa Sports Club to modernise and improve security will soon be underway thanks to grant funding secured by the Mullewa District Agricultural Society.

While two Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants totalling $398,634 will fund upgrades to the Recreation Centre, the City will provide $200,000 from the Budget for the upgrades to the Sports Club.

Recreation Centre upgrades will include the replacement of the roof sheeting, installation of a fully compliant toilet block, the replacement of the interior hall lighting with energy efficient LED luminaries and repaving the bitumen parking bays.

The Sports Club, located next door to the Recreation Centre, will have the roof re-sheeted and new air conditioning installed to replace the aged evaporate system that has reached its end of life.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn applauded the Mullewa District Agricultural Society for their efforts to help fund the works.

“I was rapt to see the Mullewa District Agricultural Society take such an active role in sourcing and securing grant funding to help maintain and improve this popular sporting facility,” he said.

“To ensure the investment in the Rec Centre is safeguarded and help protect the building from vandalism the City will be installing roller shutters on the windows.”

Mullewa District Agricultural Society President Peter Barnetson said he was pleased to be able to work with the City to improve the facility.

“The Mullewa District Agricultural Society is very happy to be allocated funds from the City of Greater Geraldton and the Regional Ag Show Development Grants to upgrade facilities integral to our Ag Show,” he said.

“The improvement to our infrastructure will not only be enjoyed on Show Day but also by the wider community.”

Mayor Van Styn said the new air conditioning at the Mullewa Sports Club will provide the building with a new lease of life.

“Summers in Mullewa are hot so the installation of new air conditioning in the clubroom will be a real game changer for the facility,” he added.

Works are scheduled to begin in early March and are expected to be completed by the end of April.
