Local Governments rally together for the community

Local Government Authorities in the Midwest are rallying together to provide welfare checks, human resources and financial support for community members impacted by Cyclone Seroja.

Many in the region still have no power or communications, and the City of Greater Geraldton, Shires of Chapman Valley, Mingenew, Morawa, Northampton and Perenjori are pooling resources to increase relief efforts.

Because of the collaboration, BlazeAid will now make their way to the Midwest to help and can hit the ground running with support works.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said everyone was coming together for the community.

“We are working with our neighbouring Local Governments to provide support, and most recently on a Cyclone Seroja Response Information form that will help us acquire information about damaged properties,” he said.

“Our staff will be visiting farmers and other rural community members to conduct welfare checks and to see if residents have power lines down in paddocks, condition of livestock, how much fencing needs replacing, if other accommodation is available and so forth.

“This information will help BlazeAid with their recovery works and identify who needs what to get back up and running in the wake of Cyclone Seroja.

“We are also taking this opportunity to check in with our community to let them know that they aren’t alone and that we are with them every step,” he added.

Mayor Shane Van Styn has also thrown his support behind BlazeAid’s work in the Midwest and donated $5,000 from the Mayoral Fund.

BlazeAid will arrive in the Midwest this week to commence relief works. The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of WA Champion Bay Branch and Yuna Branch have coordinated a welcome event on Thursday 29 April at the Yuna Community Centre from 5pm – 7pm. RSVP is essential via 0407 981 709.

In the meantime, City of Greater Geraldton staff will visit rural community members and farmers to acquire information about their properties.
