Extended trading hours gets tick of approval

Extended general retail trading hours will go ahead in Geraldton after a trial of 12 months was approved by Minister for Commerce and Industrial Relations Bill Johnston MLA.

The 12 month trial will allow larger general retailers the opportunity to open on Sundays and most Public Holidays, as well as trade later during the week. Smaller retailers already have deregulated trading hours and can trade when they choose to do so.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he couldn’t be more happy with the outcome.

“Finally our residents and visitors to our community will be able to enjoy the same trading hours that nearly all cities in WA enjoy,” he said.

“We know this has been a lengthy process but it was only a matter of time before it went ahead.

“There has been an outpouring of strong community support for extended general retail trading hours and we know this is what our community wants.”

Council passed the decision unanimously in February, in a bid to stimulate local economic activity, by activating business precincts, boost tourism and – most importantly, to meet the expressed needs and preferences of the community.

The City undertook extensive community consultation and engagement and surveys showed unwavering community support for extended trading hours.

Mayor Van Styn said the extended trading hours would bring a welcome boost to Geraldton’s CBD.

“It is very important that we activate our CBD for locals and visitors,” he said.

“The City would like to thank Minister Johnston for putting our community’s interests ahead of a small minority.

“We can continue to cement our place as a tourist destination and regional city on the rise.

“Geraldton is officially open for business!”

The City is now awaiting the official approval documents and will advise retailers and the community of the official commencement date for the extended general retail trading hours as soon as information is received.

The City anticipates that the Minister’s approval will stipulate a lead in period to enable retailers to put necessary staffing and supply measures in place for the extra trading hours.

Mid West Chamber of Commerce & Industry Chief Executive Officer Glen Whistler-Carr said it was great news for Geraldton.

“This is another step forward in the progression of Geraldton becoming a great city.”
