Council propose minimal rate increase

Ratepayers and electors will soon be invited to make submission on proposed rates and minimum payments for the 2019/20 financial year.

At this week’s Council Meeting, Councillors endorsed a proposed 1.5% rate increase as well as no increase to minimum payments, staying frozen at $1010 for a third year.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the proposed general rates showed the City was in a fiscally sound position.

“Proposed at just 1.5%, this shows how hard we’ve worked to ensure we do not put our community through high and unsustainable rate rises,” he said.

“We recognise the impact rates have on our community and we want to keep them as low as we can, while still maintaining amenities and safety by renewing infrastructure assets.

“Our hard work and commitment to asset renewal is paying off as we are paying less in maintenance.

“I’m happy to say that we are still on track to financial sustainability,” Mayor Van Styn added.

The public comment period for submissions on proposed rates, minimum payments and related matters will open on Friday 3 May 2019 and close at 5pm on Friday 24 May 2019.

Submissions will be presented to Council before discussion and deliberation. The formal adoption of rates and minimum payments will be made at the June 2019 Council Meeting.

A statement of objects and reasons for each proposed rate and minimum payment has been prepared and is available on the City’s website at www.cgg.wa.gov.au

The statement of objects and reasons will also available in hardcopy form at the Mullewa District Office, the Geraldton Regional Library and the Civic Centre on Cathedral Avenue.

The City encourages electors and ratepayers to obtain a copy of this notice and the statement.

Submissions can be mailed to the City at PO Box 101, Geraldton WA 6531; or submitted by email to: CityBudget2019-20@cgg.wa.gov.au
