Celebrating five years of Sunset Yoga

Over 100 people came together at the QEII Seniors and Community Centre over the weekend to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the City of Greater Geraldton’s Sunset Yoga Program.

“Yoga for all” is the moto of the ground-breaking initiative that is a joint partnership between the Geraldton Yoga Club, Rio Tinto and the City.

The free classes were initially part of the City’s School Holiday Program, however due to the popularity it’s now a staple on the events calendar every week.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is enthusiastic about the ongoing popularity of community yoga.

“Geraldton leads the way in this space as the first local government to introduce free yoga and subsequently we have seen other local government authorities adopt similar initiatives,” he said.

“The numbers alone speak for themselves. Initially classes would have a regular attendance of around 15 participants and now classes attract upwards of 70 people twice a week.

“The physical and mental health benefits of practising yoga are well documented and we couldn’t be prouder of the service that the Sunset Yoga Program provides to members of the public.”

Geraldton Yoga Club Chair Chantal Crinquand said the classes offered something for everyone.

“The Geraldton community yoga classes provide a supportive and inclusive environment for all people to practice yoga,” she said.

“These classes also offer yoga teachers the opportunity to connect with other like-minded yoga teachers passionate about making yoga accessible to everyone.”

Sunset yoga is open to people of all ages and abilities. Classes are held on Wednesdays at 5.30pm and Saturdays at 8am in Stow Gardens on the Geraldton Foreshore during the summer months and inside the QEII Seniors and Community Centre throughout winter.

The City would like to thank program partners Rio Tinto and Geraldton Yoga Club for their continued support.
