Beresford Foreshore is in the spotlight once again after securing excellence at last night’s Western Australian Coastal Awards.

The City of Greater Geraldton shares the honour with the City of Cockburn for demonstrating innovation and sustainability in the “Coastal Design, Heritage and Tourism” category.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was extremely proud of the project and the recognition it has received.

“Beresford Foreshore was a section of our coastline experiencing rapid erosion and together with the community, Department of Transport, Mid West Ports Authority and Mid West Development Commission we have been able to transform, protect and innovate,” he said.

“It is now a gem of our City that has a constant stream of visitors and shows what is possible with collaboration and sustainability at top of mind.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the transformation of Beresford Foreshore as well as the City of Cockburn who we share this prestigious award with.”

The Western Australian Coastal Awards are held every two years to celebrate the achievements of groups and individuals involved in protecting and managing the state’s coastline.

Works to mitigate the erosion of the Beresford Foreshore commenced in 2016. Key components of the restoration works included a protective breakwater extension, lengthening of the existing groyne, shore-based rock revetment structures and beautifying the area with landscaping, first-class amenities and public art including the esteemed sculpture “Horizon” by Lucy Humphrey.

Beresford Foreshore continues to be recognised around the state and secured Best Regional/Rural Industry Contribution Award in Western Australia by the industry peak body Parks and Leisure Australia earlier this year. It is also a finalist in the Parks and Leisure National Awards, which will be announced later this month.
