Local legends have been praised for their everyday actions in the Australia Day WA Active Citizen of the Year Awards.

Geraldton’s Community Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Dane Waters and just 100kms east Miriam Barnetson collected Mullewa’s title.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn congratulated all the winners.

“A big round of applause to all of the winners and nominees – we had a very tough time selecting a winner due to the calibre of community members who were put forward,” he said.

“It’s great to see people taking the time to nominate their local heroes and writing such meaningful nominations.

“Australia Day is about celebrating our country and its people, and I believe everyone nominated embodies the traits that Australians are so well-known and regarded for.”
