Who will plant the 500,000th tree?

With only 4172 plantings to go, the greater Geraldton community is about to reach a major Million Trees project milestone of 500,000 trees or shrubs planted in and around the City region.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn is urging residents, groups of people or businesses who have planted trees or shrubs to make them count by registering them with the City towards the project so the achievement can be reached and celebrated.

“We are so close to smashing this major milestone,” he said.

“With all the garden improvements that took place at the height of COVID-19 restrictions, we may already be there but we won’t know unless people register any trees and shrubs they’ve planted.

“To mark achieving this major milestone, the City will be giving the person or group of people who registers the 500,000 planting a tree they can plant on their property.”

Since the project began in 2010, community members, groups and local businesses have registered 495,828 trees and shrubs they planted on their property towards the project.

Mayor Van Styn said the idea to plant a million trees came about in the 2029 and Beyond project which ran from 2010-2013.

“In early 2010, the City held a series of World Cafés and asked the community what they like about the place they call home, what they didn't want to lose as the City grows and what would make it an even better place to live by 2029 and Beyond,” he said.

“The number one answer was to green the City region and plant more trees so the Million Trees project with the catch phrase ‘planting a million trees is in the community's hands’ was launched.

“Ten years and nearly 500,000 plantings later we are certainly on course to meet our target but with less than nine years left to go, we really need the community to register plantings they have made since the project began.”

Community members, groups and local businesses who have planted trees or shrubs of any kind, including fruit trees, on their property in the last ten years and not yet registered them can make them count towards the Million Trees project by filling out an online form on the City’s website here.  Alternatively, you can also email janellk@cgg.wa.gov.au or call 9956 6945.
