Geraldton Airport Microgrid Project
Geraldton Airport sits at the edge of Western Australia’s electricity grid, which makes it more vulnerable to power issues caused by an aging network and increasing regional demand. Despite being a vital hub for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and SES emergency operations, the airport does not have its own backup power system to protect against unreliable grid supply.
In September 2024, construction of a microgrid at the airport powered purely by renewable energy began, a first in the southern hemisphere.
The project not only does it put the City further along its path towards reaching net zero by 2030 emissions target it also means our community will be far more resilient when natural disasters occur as the Airport and adjacent emergency services precinct will still be able to function in the event of a power failure.Read more here.
Construction of the $5million project is funded in part by a $2million grant from the Commonwealth Government’s Disaster Relief Fund.
This project acknowledges the funding contribution of the Commonwealth Government and support of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
