Mitigation of coastal erosion at Sunset Beach continues with the construction of three additional groynes scheduled to begin the first week in January 2024.
The project includes the construction of three 40m long low-crest Geotextile Sand Container (GSC) groynes, spaced 70m apart, between Bosley Street and Swan Drive and the import of approximately 7000m3 of sand to nourish the foreshore area.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the recently completed groynes located between Triton Place and Bosley Street are already showing positive results.
“It’s only been five months since the three GSC groynes were completed and I am very pleased to see the width of the beach at this location has already grown,” he said.
“GSCs are the community’s preferred option to address coastal erosion as the beach can still be enjoyed and should they no longer be needed, they can easily be removed.
“Implementing this option demonstrates the City’s commitment to working collaboratively with the community who said during the coastal planning process that they highly value our beaches for social and recreational purposes.”
This adaption measure is consistent with the Geraldton Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP), which is based on the requirements and adaptation hierarchy of Western Australia's State Planning Policy No. 2.6 – State Coastal Planning Policy (SPP2.6).
The $1.36 million project is joint funded with $615,000 provided by the State Government through the CoastWA Hotspot Coastal Adaptation and Protection (H-CAP) Major Project Fund.
Construction of the groynes will be undertaken by local contractor Red Dust Holdings with coastal engineers M P Rogers providing technical services.
The ensure community safety during the works the Bosley Street carpark along with the beach and foreshore dune area from the carpark south to Swan Drive will be closed to the public.
The estimated date of completion is April 2024.
