Youth Crime Prevention in Geraldton and Mullewa are on track to receive a hefty boost in the 2017/18 Budget with over $100,000 allocated for various programs.

The Mullewa Youth Centre, Midnight Basketball, School Holiday Program, Friday Night Football and the City’s U-Turn Project are among the winners in the newly announced budget with an extra $75,000 to be possibly added subject to grant funding from the Department of Attorney General.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the budget would mean many successful established programs would be able to continue.

“The great thing about this budget is that we will be able to see the continuation of so many programs that we know are absolutely vital to our community and more in particular, at risk youth,” he said.

“Programs such as U-Turn, Midnight Basketball and Friday Night Football have created a real positive change in Geraldton and it is important for us to keep the momentum going.

“These programs provide an environment that many of our youth who are at risk need, as well as getting them off the streets and teaching them valuable life lessons.”

The Mullewa Youth Centre is set to get $18,000 to continue the delivery of activities such as cooking, sports, music etc.

A further $20,000 is set aside for the School Holiday Program, which is delivered every school holidays by the City in partnership with local service providers.

A total of $15,000 will go towards U-Turn Crime prevention, something Mayor Van Styn said is key for both the Mullewa and Geraldton community.

“U-Turn Project focuses on activities that highlight the importance of team work, cultural identity, respect and trust,” he said.
“So far the projects we have seen come out of U-Turn include BikeRescue, the recent demolition derby and several public art initiatives.

“We have received so much positive feedback from not only the community but also the youth who participate in these programs.

“We know how important it is for the City to keep delivering projects such as these and that’s why youth has featured heavily in the new budget.”
