Geraldton’s much-loved public art piece Horizon has been given Council’s vote to be replaced after it suffered a structural failure last month.
What happened to the 1.5metre sphere is still being determined but a mixture of warm weather and vandalism may have been contributing factors.
A replacement sculpture as well as the installation of CCTV assets will now be assessed in the City’s 2021/22 mid-year budget review.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he wants Horizon replaced as soon as possible.
“You just have to walk the streets of Geraldton and read the outpour on social media to get a feel for how loved this sculpture at Beresford Foreshore actually is,” he said.
“Horizon is the City’s most successful public art piece and to see it in the state it was a few weeks ago was a shocking and sad moment.
“As part of our mid-year budget review we will also look at installing CCTV assets in the area to ensure any future damage is recorded. We hope that the sculpture isn’t vandalised again but we are looking into security measures just in case.”
Horizon by artist Lucy Humphrey was installed at Beresford Foreshore in 2019 after securing national awards for Sculptures by the Sea.
It quickly became a “must see” in Geraldton and had a constant stream of visitors months after installation.
The City is in discussion with the artist on the production of a new sculpture, however there are some delays due to COVID-19.
The new Horizon is expected to look identical to the previous sculpture.
