Bella, Buddy, Max and Molly are the top dogs when it comes to names registered in Geraldton, and now is the time to make sure your best mate is registered too!

Or maybe you’re more of a cat person? Luna, Simba and Tiger top the local feline name list of registered cats, and did you know there are two local cats named Pudding?

No matter what you’ve named your precious pet, community members are urged to ensure they are registered and microchipped before the Friday 31 October 2025 deadline.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said it was important pet owners did the right thing for the safety of their best mates.

“Pets are special family members and they play such an important role in our health and wellbeing,” he said.

“Registering and microchipping, along with making sure your contact details are up to date, ensures your pet can be quickly returned to you if they are found wandering.

“It’s not rocket science, we are calling on our community to do the right thing when it comes to responsible pet ownership.”

Under the state government’s Dog Act 1976 and Cat Act 2011 both must be microchipped and registered with their local government authority.

Data shows 48% of Australian households own at least one dog and with 8,838 dogs registered in Greater Geraldton, this suggests a significant discrepancy and a need for more dog registrations.

All dogs over the age of three months must be registered, microchipped and wear a collar with a registration tag and the same applies to cats over six months of age who must also be sterilised.

As well as being registered and microchipped, it is important details are up to date such as phone number and address or if your pet has sadly passed away.

Those who have recently relocated to the area can exchange their current registration tag for a City of Greater Geraldton one free of charge.

Animals can be registered via the City’s website or at the Civic Centre and Mullewa District Office.

More information regarding pet ownership in Greater Geraldton can also be found on the City’s website.

Responsible Dog Ownership reflects the City’s commitment to providing a community where everyone feels safe.
