Overnight parking strategies for tourists adopted

With summer just around the corner, Council has adopted three Recreational Vehicle strategies which designate the locations of free overnight parking to encourage tourists to stay for a day in the City during their travels.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the three strategies enable the City to meet the varied overnight parking needs of visitors and maintain the requirements to remain one of the 270 member strong network of RV Friendly Towns across Australia.

“We want to continue to give tourists who would have normally driven right past the opportunity to stay one night for free in our City.  We are confident once they see our beautiful beaches and take in some of the sites they will want to stay longer which brings economic benefit to the community,” he said.

“Therefore, the Francis Street carpark will remain the designated site for free overnight parking for self-contained motorised camper vehicles and caravans or camping trailers as they do not typically need access to the nearby public toilets in the Youth Precinct which are closed at night.

“Whereas the Point Moore carpark and John Batten Community Hall carpark in Drummond Cove are better suited for free overnight parking for non-self-contained motorised camper vans and vehicles as both locations have 24-hour access to public toilets, showers, waste facilities and barbeques.”

Nine, 16.5m long parking bays have been allocated in the Francis Street carpark for 24-hour free parking for self-contained RVs, caravans and camping trailers. These spaces are not bookable and are available on a first come, first served basis.

Signage will be erected at Point Moore and Drummond Cove carparks to indicate which bays non-self-contained camper vehicles are allowed free 24-hour parking.

The use of these three carparks for free overnight parking will be monitored by City Rangers.  Visitors who wish to stay in the City for more than 24 hours will be directed to local caravan parks or basic camps.
