New RFDS base for the Midwest

Emergency medical services across the Midwest and Gascoyne have received a major boost following the State Government’s confirmation of $7.5 million to support the operation of a new Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) base in Geraldton.

Funding for the new base will enhance RFDS capacity and support the expansion of the Geraldton Health Campus, already the busiest RFDS retrieval location in Western Australia with around 900 patient referrals each year.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the investment was a significant win for the community and reinforced Geraldton’s role as a critical regional health and emergency gateway.

“This funding will deliver more boots on the ground and faster access to life‑saving health services for people across the Midwest and Gascoyne,” he said.

“Establishing an RFDS base in Geraldton means improved response times, increased service capability and better outcomes for patients who rely on aeromedical services.

“Locating the RFDS base at the airport will also strengthen our Airport’s role as a regional aviation hub and ensure the community receives the full benefit of this essential service.”

The City is currently working closely with RFDS WA to identify a suitable location at Geraldton Airport.

This program aligns with the Liveable theme of the Strategic Community Plan that advocates for better access to services that improve community health and wellbeing.
