Nangetty-Walkaway Road Bridge officially reopens

Recently completed upgrades to one of the City’s key transport routes were celebrated today at the official opening of the newly constructed Nangetty-Walkaway Road Bridge.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the new bridge will help support the connectivity of our region into the future.

“This bridge is more than just concrete and steel, it symbolises the modern solutions required to support the growing demands of our transport industry,” he said.

“The previous bridge built in 1964, that replaced the original wooden one from 1896, was designed for the vehicles of its time, however a regular audit conducted in 2021 indicated increased freight operations and use of RAV7 trucks had impacted the structure and it needed to be replaced.

“I would like to thank the State and Federal Governments for helping fund this vital link in our transport network which supports both our community and our economy.

“I’d also like to thank the community for their patience, especially the RAV 7 truck drivers and local residents who used the detours during the construction works.”

The $8 million project was joint funded with the Australian Government contributing $4,539,307 under their Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, the WA State Government providing $1 million with the City contributing the remaining funds.

This project reflects the City’s commitment to the maintenance and connectivity of the transport network and aligns with the “Liveable” theme in the new Strategic Community Plan 2025 – 2035, Your Voice – Our Future.
