Mitchell Street Community Centre under new management

A five year lease to manage the Mitchell Street Community Centre located in Spalding has been granted to the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation (GSAC).

Since its construction in the 1980’s, the Department of Local Government and Communities had leased the property for a peppercorn rent from the City until 2016 when WA Centre of Rural Health (WACRH) signed a five year lease for the facility but declined the offer to renew their lease when it ended a few weeks ago.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new five year lease with GSAC will ensure a seamless continuation of services and programs provided at the centre.

“The Mitchell Street Community Centre provides essential community services to Spalding and the surrounding suburbs with out of school and holiday programs, valued health services and community initiatives such as sporting and educational activities and aged programs,” he said.

“GSAC is one of the many organisations who collaborated with WACRH over the past five years to offer these programs and services and has even been operating from an office in the Centre for the last four years.

“They are also a member of the Spalding Urban Renewal Team comprised of local residents and business owners along with other service providers who are working together to develop a master plan to revitalise the Centre, AMC Park and surrounding areas.”

GSAC Executive Officer Adrian Bartlett thanked the Council, WACRH and their funding bodies for supporting programming and services at the Centre.

“On behalf of GSAC I would like to thank Council for awarding our organisation with a five year lease of the Centre which comes at an exciting time with the Spalding revitalisation project in full swing,” he said.

“We will strive to continue and improve our program in Spalding and in the wider community.

“I would also like to acknowledge and thank WA Centre for Rural Health for their valued partnership and our major funding bodies NIAA and Healthway for their continued support, which enables GSAC to produce a quality community program overseen by a Aboriginal not for profit organisation.”
