Nearly $400,000 will be spent on various environmental initiatives in the 2017/18 financial year in a bid to keep local natural areas on track for future sustainability.

Initiatives include stabilisation projects for local rivers and beaches, weed management, coastal protection and environmental planning.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was important for long-term solutions to be put into place.

“Future sustainability for our environment is a huge priority for the City and we’ve put some great things in place already but we need to keep this on track,” he said.

“Both the Chapman and Greenough Rivers will be a focus for various works as will our coastline.

“Some of our local beaches have been in the spotlight during the last year with erosion a continuing problem but our efforts to combat the issue are ongoing.”

Over $150,000 will be spent on beach works and soft coastal management in the coming financial year, which will include works such as sand trapping, beach stabilisation and coastal planting at several locations.

A total of $70,000 will be spent on invasive species management with a large portion focused on weed management.

The African Boxthorn weed in particular will be of focus throughout local natural areas as will other invasive weeds.

Mayor Van Styn said a lot of the funds were focused on managing local biodiversity.

“We have a very rich and diverse environment and it’s important we manage this in the appropriate way with the correct methods,” he said.

“This includes keeping our flora and fauna safe while being able to eradicate any detrimental species to our natural environment.”

River corridors will also receive assistance with on-ground works to go ahead including seeding, planting, stabilisation programs and access management.
