Commitment to delivering a safer road network has seen the City of Greater Geraldton recognised at the RoadWise Regional Awards.
Earlier this year the City gained two-ribbon status for demonstrating a consistent commitment to planning, implementing, monitoring and communicating road safety action.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said road safety always remains a top priority for Council.
“We have an extremely vast network that spans from our CBD, to as far away as Greenough, Walkaway and Mullewa,” he said.
“As one of our biggest assets, we dedicate a substantial portion of our operating budget to road renewals each year.
“With Geraldton being a regional capital and connecting the Midwest to and from the state’s north and south, it is extremely important we maintain a safe road network not just for our community, but for the many people travelling through our region.”
In the 2024/25 financial year, the City allocated $12.3 million to repair and maintain 25.85kms of sealed roads, to re-sheet 55.2kms of unsealed roads including the resurfacing of four rural road intersections and renewing 50kms of road shoulders and swales.
Blackspot funding was secured to redesign the Pass Street, Rifle Range Road and Eastward Road roundabout, undertake construction works on the Chapman Road and Bosley Street roundabout in Sunset as well as works on Abattoir/Siding Road in Moonyoonooka.
Community engagement for the Maitland Park Transport Hub concept plan which has led to further funding was also finalised, along with completion of the Nangetty-Walkaway Road Bridge replacement.
Greater Geraldton’s two-ribbon status was determined by the largest increase in level of activity recorded within a regional road group.
The RoadWise initiative is designed to encourage, guide and motivate local governments towards better practice in managing road safety performance.
Based on the RoadWise Framework, RoadWise Councils are awarded points and ribbons highlighting their rounded approach to road safety and application of better practice in the planning and delivery of effective interventions, and the adoption of a holistic approach to road safety.
Road safety aligns with the “Liveable” theme in the City’s Strategic Community Plan, which reflects the organisation’s commitment to improving maintenance and connectivity of the City’s transport network.
