One of the City’s most sustainable parks and popular venue for family get-togethers just got a whole lot better with the opening of a public toilet block in Derna Park.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the newly built facility demonstrates the City’s commitment to investing in the suburbs through activation of public open spaces.

“Wandina is an up and coming suburb and in the past few years the City has transformed the former green field site into a beautiful and sustainable parkland where you can have a barbeque, play a game of footy or just relax amongst the native trees and shrubs,” he said.

“The City has built this new facility in the heart of the suburb to benefit the kids, local residents and visitors.”

Investment in the area will continue over the coming months with the assistance of the local primary school and grant funding for the construction of a ‘nature playground’ in the park.

“Last year the City partnered with Wandina Primary School to apply for grant funding and share the costs of constructing a community nature playground in Derna Park,” said Mayor Van Styn.

“Now that Royalties for Regions grant funding via the Mid West Development Commission has been secured for the project, construction of the playground can go ahead.

“Once the playground is completed in approximately 12 months’ time Derna Park will, without a doubt, become a must visit destination for young families.”

Derna Park is one of eight district parks located across the City region such as Glendinning, Muir, Maitland and Woorree Parks.  The City’s Public Open Space Strategy defines district parks as being centrally located, support a variety of concurrent uses including informal sports, children’s play, picnicking, exercising a dog, social gatherings and individual activities.
