Rabbit baiting program commences

The City of Greater Geraldton advises that rabbit baiting in several local areas will soon commence as part of the annual Integrated Rabbit Control Program.

Pindone baiting is scheduled to take place from Monday 23 March 2026 to Tuesday 14 April 2026. The pre‑feeding phase, involving the distribution of clean oats, has already begun.

The following locations will be included in this year’s program:

  • Muir Park Arboretum – Strathalbyn.
  • Community Nursery and adjacent City reserve – Waggrakine.
  • Chapman River Regional Park – Fairfax entrance, Tappak area, and north–south service tracks.
  • Western side of the Macedonian Club – Glenfield.

Oats treated with Pindone will be laid at night, when rabbits are most active and to minimise risks to non‑target species. Treated oats will be placed in shallow furrows on the ground to maximise uptake by rabbits.

Signage will be installed throughout these areas to inform the community that rabbit baiting is underway. Surrounding landholders and visitors to the park are reminded that they are responsible for managing their pets carefully during this period.

To achieve the greatest reduction in rabbit numbers, community members are encouraged to undertake their own rabbit control activities at the same time as this program.

Adjacent landholders are asked to bury or dispose of any rabbit carcasses found on their properties to reduce the risk to non‑target species that may consume dead rabbits.

These works align with the Liveable theme of the City’s Strategic Community Plan which reflects the organisation’s commitment to managing and protecting the natural environment.
