A bold wildflower graphic design of an unprecedented scale in regional Western Australia is growing interest around the City of Greater Geraldton’s first CBD revitalisation project.
Designed by renowned artist Trevor Richards, the Rocks Laneway Project meta graphic representing yellow, white and pink Geraldton wildflowers on a bed of dark green sea grass, will span from the laneway pavement, to the walls of the Telstra building, across Marine Terrace and through the Rocks Laneway to the Foreshore.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the meta graphic design isn’t just a way finder between the City centre and Foreshore; it’s also about creating interest and drawing people to Geraldton and the CBD.
“Since releasing the Master Plans for the Rocks Laneway Project the colourful triangles have been the topic of countless discussions in the community and on social media,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter whether people love or hate the meta graphic, they will want to see it for themselves and without a doubt, share their images of the design on Facebook and Instagram which will generate even more interest in the project.
“Due to the sheer size and extent of the meta graphic, visitors will be drawn along the laneway where they will also be able to view community art displayed in light boxes on the Telstra building.
“Whilst people are in the area, they may want to stop at a few shops or grab a coffee and snack with friends and family.”
Telstra Regional General Manager Boyd Brown said Telstra completely supports the Rocks Laneway Project, which is focussed on rejuvenating the thoroughfare.
“This project is a great opportunity for Telstra to contribute to the community while at the same time ensuring a visual improvement of the Telstra property and the local area,” he said.
“The design is perfect and we fully support the artwork. In fact, we’re prepared to offer more of the exchange building as a blank canvas if required by the project.”
The colourful meta graphic will be painted onto the Telstra building using high quality exterior paint whilst non-slip, hardwearing road marking paint will be used to paint the pavement.
Construction of the project is expected to begin early next year with an estimated date of completion for September 2019.
