Rocks Laneway has officially opened to the community and The Geraldton Project have come on board to keep the space active and alive.
As the Place Managers of Rocks Laneway, the organisation will be responsible for establishing the stretch as a community space as well as a destination to visitors.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn congratulated The Geraldton Project on their appointment.
“The organisation has already started with a bang by hosting a variety of school holiday activities and having about 50 to 80 youngsters per session,” he said.
“I am confident that these events to activate the space will continue to grow in popularity and help drive more traffic through the city centre.”
“This will have enormous flow on effects for the business community as well as create more vibrancy and character in the central part of Marine Terrace.”
Part of the Place Management role for the next 12 months includes the establishment of the Friends of the Rocks Laneway group, which will help channel the community’s interests, communicate concerns, guide how the creative, community and commercial objectives are achieved and help identify further opportunities for activation.
The Geraldton Project Executive Director David Bowman-Bright said initial activations had included a range of activities.
“Acoustic performances from local musicians, African drumming, poetry readings, art and basket-making workshops and school holiday activities are just some of the events held in the space so far,” he said.
“We’re excited to be working with the City, retailers, local organisations and the community to build a program of engaging pop-up activities. We’d love to hear from any local organisations or artists who are interested in utilising Rocks Laneway.
“The Laneway has already proven its worth as a great community space that helps attract people into Geraldton’s CBD.”
Upcoming events in the space include community sewing days with Boomerang Bags and The Paperback Community Book Exchange.
