With less than three weeks to go in the rural road repairs program the City is set to complete repairs to 43 flood damaged rural roads ahead of schedule.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the heavy rainfalls last summer could have left the City with holding a multi-million dollar bill to repair more than 600kms of flood damaged rural roads if external funding hadn’t been sourced.
“More than $4.39 million in external funding was secured from the Western Australia Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, which covered 100 per cent of the clean-up costs and 75% of the restoration works,” he said.
“Securing grant funding to undertake these repairs was critical as the damage far exceeded the City’s allocated budget for rural road maintenance and repairs.”
The works to reinstate the roads have also supported the local economy.
“Works which included light cut and grade to full re-sheeting and reconstruction along with the reinstatement and resealing of some floodways were delivered by Red Dust Holdings. Greenfield Technical Services and GHD provided input on the environmental and heritage aspects of the project,” Mayor Van Styn added.
“Many local landowners also provided the City with gravel and water used in the repairs.
“Through this program, millions of dollars of external funds have been invested into our rural road network.”
