Improving community health and safety along with projects to revitalise the local economy are the focus of the City’s new Capital Works Program as part of the 2018/19 Budget.
Three of the top projects in the Program primed for construction over the next 12 months include a new Animal Management Facility, cell five at the Meru Waste Disposal Facility and a new State Emergency Services (SES) building.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said these projects provide important outcomes for the community.
“The construction of the new SES building at the Geraldton Airport, which will be completely funded by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services via the Emergency Services Levy, is a much needed and welcome improvement for our community,” he said.
“The new Animal Management Facility at Davies Road will also ensure the City complies with RSPCA guidelines for the humane treatment of animals.
“Construction of a much needed landfill cell at Meru will also go ahead and should our grant application for Building Better Regions Funding be successful, a resources recovery facility will also be built which will enable our community to recycle more of its waste before safely disposing their rubbish.
“Funds have also been allocated to undertake ongoing and emerging coastal erosion and inundation mitigation works, which will be informed by the Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Planning Report,” he added.
The City is also undertaking capital works projects to help improve the local economy.
“We will be resurfacing the Airport runway, and if we are successful in obtaining Building Better Regions Grant Funding we will also extend the runway to 2400m in length. This will enable larger aircraft to land which will benefit the tourism industry and facilitate new export opportunities,” Mayor Van Styn said.
“The installation of entry billboards on the north, south and east sides of the City will also help encourage travellers to stop for more than just fuel.
“We are also looking forward to growth projects such as revitalising the CBD by developing Rocks Laneway and undertaking upgrades to Lot 601 on Foreshore Drive. These projects will ensure the town centre and our Foreshore are vibrant places locals and tourists want to be.”
Other projects in the Program, which will result in further reductions to operating costs, include the installation of a solar photovoltaic generation system at the Geraldton Airport, Aquarena and Geraldton Regional Library; Stage 2 installations of the remote irrigation system at parks and sporting grounds; and the provision of water sources at various sites in the Mullewa agricultural area for rural road maintenance and firefighting.
