Dropping off your unwanted items and materials at the Meru Waste Management Facility will get a whole lot easier following the opening of the new Resource Recovery Station on Wednesday 10 January 2024.
The one stop ‘shop’ let’s residents and small commercial vehicles take their unwanted items, left over materials and general waste to one place where these resources can be more safely, easily and economically recovered, repurposed and recycled.
City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune thanked the Australian Government for helping fund the new facility which is designed to meet the growing needs of the community.
“Meru, or the Tip, is visited nearly 9,000 times every month and the new 20 bay, fit for purpose facility has been built to accommodate this steadily increasing number,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for providing $1.13 million to build the new facility which enables these valuable resources, which used to be considered waste, to be conveniently and safely dropped off at one central location.
“The increase in recovered resources not only reduces waste being disposed of in landfill, which moves us towards a more circular economy, it will also generate economic returns for the City.”
The Resource Recovery Station has individual collection bays for cardboard, organic materials, batteries, couches, mattresses, scrap metal, electronics, white goods, tyres, empty gas bottles up to 9kgs, household hazardous waste, mixed recyclables (cardboard and plastic bottles), asbestos and old bricks, concrete and small amounts of building materials.
Separation will be the key to the new Resource Recovery Station working. More information on how to make your trip to the facility fast and simple is available here
The $7.36 million project was joint funded with the Australian Government contributing $1.13 million and the City the remaining $6.23 million.
