PICTURE CAPTION: City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn and Walkaway Primary School Teacher Lisa Smith are joined by school students at the recently installed blue bin located at the Walkaway Primary School.

Recycling of plastic bottles just got a whole lot easier for the Walkaway community with the recent setup of a blue bin at the local Primary School.

Following requests from the Walkaway Primary School and Walkaway Development Association the City delivered the bins last week.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the City welcomed interest from the Walkaway community to recycle their plastic drink bottles.

“The City wants the recycling of type 1 and 2 plastic bottles to be as accessible as possible,” he said.

“We have listened to the Walkaway community and are very pleased to be able to extend the blue bin service local residents.”

Walkaway Primary School teacher Lisa Smith said studies into sustainability had prompted her students to contact the City about the blue bin program.

“Four of the senior students in my class, who are Change Champions for recycling, wrote letters and emails to the City requesting a blue bin for the Walkaway community,” she said.

“We were thrilled to hear the City agreed to our request and we now have a blue bin in town which will make recycling our plastic bottles so much easier.”

There are now a total of 17 blue bin drop off points located across the City for the purpose of recycling type 1 and 2 plastic milk, mineral water, soft drink and water bottles only.

To identify what plastics are type 1 and 2, look for the symbol on the item. Plastics include clear or common white soft drink, juice, milk and water bottles.

People are also reminded to remove bottle lids and rinse the bottles out before recycling.
