Time to prepare for bushfire season

Following months of record rainfall and vegetation growth residents are urged to start preparing their families and properties for the coming bushfire season.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said a well prepared home and property is more likely to survive a bush fire and can also be easier to defend.

“There are lots of things that can and must be done to slow the rate of spreading fires and reduce potential property damage by enabling safer access for firefighters which will ultimately prevent the loss of lives,” he said.

“Removing all vegetation or other inflammable materials at least 3m from buildings on your property along with pruning trees and shrubs so they aren’t so dense is the first place to start.

“Cutting the grass cut to 7.5cm or less and cleaning up leaves, twigs and other debris from your roof gutters and around your property is the next step.”

“Depending on the size of your property, owners are also required to undertake specific fire prevention measures as outlined in the Annual Firebreak Notices issued with Rates Notices.”

On developed blocks under 4000m2 in size wattle bush must be maintained to a maximum height of 2.5m and the canopy of the bush may not exceed your property boundaries or else removed.

Whereas medium sized lots between 4000m2 and 5 hectares must have minimum 3m wide mineral earth or mulch firebreak against the boundary fence in place or the entire property must be mowed or slashed to a maximum height of 7.5cm.

Mayor Van Styn said the City the deadline to finish preparations for the coming bushfire season is fast approaching.

“Property owners have until 4 October 2021 to have all bushfire prevention measures in place. On 5 October fire prevention inspections begin and infringements for non-compliance will be issued,” he added.
