Finding a shady spot to have a bite to eat on Geraldton foreshores might be easier in the coming months with Council supporting a motion for more pop-up shade sails.

In a motion put forward by City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn at last week’s Council Meeting, Councillors agreed to approve the installation of shade sails adjacent to leases on the Foreshore with all costs borne by the relevant leaseholder.

Once built, ownership and maintenance of the shade structures is to be handed over to the City.

Mayor Van Styn said he had received a lot of feedback from community members, and businesses, about the ongoing need for more shade.

“Businesses on both the Geraldton and Beresford Foreshore have expressed the need to enhance their customer’s experience, and provide more space for people to enjoy our amazing public open spaces for longer,” he said.

“We also want to promote a sun smart community, and in doing that – we need to provide ample spaces for people to enjoy themselves and not worry about getting sunburnt.

“I think most people would agree, the addition of eateries on our foreshores has really helped to create vibrancy and a fantastic culture.

“I love going for a stroll on the weekend and seeing how many people are out and about, supporting local businesses and taking in our stunning foreshores.”

The City will now work with leaseholders on proposed shade sail structures to ensure designs are in keeping with the surrounds.
