Students from Mullewa and Perth recently came together to give the Mullewa Pioneer Cemetery some special treatment.

In the lead up to one of Mullewa’s busiest weeks which included the Wildflower Show and the Agricultural Show, students from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School and visiting students from Perth’s Newman College made the pilgrimage to the Cemetery for its annual clean up.

This included weeding and the general tidying up of debris in the area.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel students were guided by long time teacher Dr Jill Holland and learnt about those buried at the cemetery and their connections to the Mullewa community as some of the students have family connections to those buried.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn thanked the students for their annual involvement.

“The site is a significant heritage area and we thank the students for helping us preserve such an important piece of our region’s history,” he said.

“We would also like to call on the community to help us to uncover the local history of the area.”

On the day, Father Robert O’Brien then conducted a small mass on site to reflect on those buried at this location.

Mullewa locals, Mr Clem Keeffe, Ms Vivienne Crudeli and Ms Bernadette Drummond have been researching those buried at the Pioneer Cemetery for many years.

After exhausting their avenues for research they have handed their findings over to the City’s Mullewa and Heritage teams to collate and publish this information into a form that will be user friendly for visitors and family to locate descendants.

Mr Keeffe, Ms Crudeli and Ms Drummond have also uncovered a long list of Aboriginal people who were buried in the grounds of the Cemetery but their exact location and family links are not known.

“If anyone has any information around the Aboriginal people buried at this Cemetery the City would very much like to hear from you to capture this important part of Mullewa’s history,” Mayor Van Styn added.

Those who may have information can contact the City on (08)9956 6600 or email council@cgg.wa.gov.au
